Tunisian American Artist Emel Mathlouthi on the Power of Women, Music and Activism
In 2011, Emel Mathlouthi stood among the crowd of protesters in Tunis and began singing her song “Kelmti Horra,” which means “My Word Is Free.” Overnight, an anthem of the Arab Spring was born. Emel became known as “the voice of the Tunisian Revolution” and went on to perform all over the world, including at the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize Concert, where she sang “Kelmti Horra.” Singing in Arabic, English and Spanish, Emel does not shy away from talking about social issues — from dedicating her songs to Mahsa Amini in Iran to calling for justice in Palestine. She recently came by the Democracy Now! studio to perform and talk about her music.

Julian Brave NoiseCat on His Memoir, Indigenous Peoples' Day and Hegseth's Wounded Knee Decision
Watch Part 2 of our interview with award-winning writer, journalist and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Julian Brave NoiseCat as he discusses his debut book, We Survived the Night, and much more. The book weaves together his family’s stories of survival with personal memories, Indigenous oral histories and legends, and on-the-ground reporting that lay bare the resilience of Indigenous peoples across the continent in the face of centuries of colonial genocide. We spoke on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and NoiseCat also discusses the importance of having “our legacy, our history recognized on our land.” He also responds to Defense Secretary Hegseth’s announcement that 20 Medal of Honor recipients from the 1890 Battle of Wounded Knee massacre will keep their awards. “This is a really tragic moment in United States history,” NoiceCat says. “I think that everybody would recognize that killing 300 men women, and children is not something to be celebrated.”

"Enshittification" Part 2: Author Cory Doctorow on Technofeudalism, "Bottom-Up Resistance" Apps & More
Watch Part 2 of our interview with Cory Doctorow, writer and tech activist, whose new book, Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It, is out this week. “Enshittification” is now in Webster’s Dictionary, and Doctorow relates the term he coined to the concept of technofeudalism as a way of understanding what went wrong for tech workers, and how platforms and apps like Uber are regulated. He also describes apps that are part of a “bottom-up resistance,” and his work with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) for over 20 years, and how it is the first organization to have filed a lawsuit that names Elon Musk and DOGE by name.

"Arrest the War Criminal": Thousands Protest Netanyahu in NYC as He Addresses U.N.
Thousands of protesters took to the streets of New York on Friday in solidarity with Palestinians and to denounce Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he addressed the United Nations General Assembly. Crowds marched from Times Square toward the U.N., chanting slogans demanding Netanyahu’s arrest for war crimes and an end to U.S. support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Meanwhile, inside the U.N., the Israeli leader addressed a largely empty room as many countries’ delegations walked out in protest.

After Protests, Microsoft Cuts Off Israel's Access to Cloud Services Used to Spy on Palestinians
Microsoft says it has barred the Israeli military from using the company’s services to spy on millions of Palestinian civilian phone calls made each day in Gaza and the occupied West Bank and stored in Microsoft’s vast Azure cloud computing platform.
It’s an unprecedented victory for No Azure for Apartheid, a group of current and former Microsoft workers demanding an end to Microsoft’s work with the Israeli military.
We speak to Hossam Nasr, an organizer with No Azure for Apartheid and a former Microsoft employee who was fired last October after organizing a vigil outside the Microsoft headquarters for Palestinians killed by Israel’s military in Gaza.
