Filipino Director Lav Diaz on "Magellan," Colonialism in the Philippines & More
The new film Magellan chronicles the life of Portuguese colonizer Ferdinand Magellan, the first person to circumnavigate the globe. Known for his voyage crossing the Pacific Ocean and landing on the island of Cebu, now the Philippines, the movie shows how Magellan was heralded as a hero to some, but is viewed as a murderer by many. In the film, the famed, acclaimed actor Gael García Bernal plays Magellan. We speak to the film’s director, Lav Diaz, an award-winning filmmaker and writer from the Philippines.

The documentary Yanuni profiles Indigenous chief and activist Juma Xipaia, who has survived six assassination attempts while defending her people’s land from illegal gold miners and deforestation. Shortlisted for a 2026 Academy Award, the film highlights her fight for Indigenous sovereignty and the preservation of the Amazon, her historic appointment as Brazil’s first secretary of Indigenous rights and the challenges faced during the administration of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Watch Part 2 of our interview about All the Walls Came Down–a new short documentary by filmmaker Ondi Timoner that looks back at the devastating 2025 fires in Los Angeles, which destroyed Timoner’s home and left the historically Black community of Altadena in ruins. Her story is the focus of the new documentary Holding Liat, directed by Brandon Kramer. The film follows her parents, Yehuda and Chaya Beinin, as they cope with the fear and uncertainty of their daughter’s captivity while witnessing Israel’s war on Gaza unfold in real time.
Holding Liat premieres Friday, January 9, at Film Forum in New York, where Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman will moderate a Q&A with Liat Atzili and director Brandon Kramer.
