Back from Gaza, Palestinian Writer Susan Abulhawa Says “Language is Inadequate” to Describe Horror
Palestinian novelist, poet and activist Susan Abulhawa joins us for Part 2 of her interview from Cairo after two weeks in Gaza. She discusses the impact of “unlimited weaponry” supplied by the United States for Israel to bomb and starve civilians there. “Language is really inadequate and insufficient to capture the enormity of this moment,” says Abulhawa. “What I’ve seen is really a fraction of the totality of this horror.” She is the founder and co-director of Playgrounds for Palestine, a children’s organization and the Executive Director of Palestine Writes Literature Festival.

Alabama IVF Patient's Warning to Others Outside the State: "You Are Not Safe"
We continue our conversation with Alabama-based writer and artist Abbey Crain, who had been receiving in vitro fertilization treatments for about two years when the state Supreme Court issued its controversial ruling that frozen embryos are “children,” opening both patients and medical providers to new legal risks. State lawmakers have since passed protections for IVF providers, but they have not challenged the underlying logic of the court ruling. Crain says IVF is coming under threat as part of a larger Republican assault on reproductive healthcare, warning people outside the state, in a recent Glamour article, that “you are not special and you are not safe” from similar restrictions.

Ben Crump: Houston Police Shoot Eboni Pouncy in Friend's Apartment in Case Compared to Breonna Taylor
We speak with civil rights attorney Ben Crump about a Houston woman shot five times by police after they mistook her for an intruder. Eboni Pouncy and her friend were asleep in the back of the friend’s apartment when they were woken up by two officers who began shooting through a window. The officers were responding to an alleged break-in after Pouncy’s friend broke a window to enter her apartment when she forgot her key. Newly released body-camera footage shows the shooting barrage. “It is clearly excessive. I mean, they shot over two dozen rounds,” says Crump, who asks why police officers “shoot first and ask questions later” when they encounter law-abiding African Americans who are armed. He compares the case to the police killing of Breonna Taylor in her apartment in 2020.
